Cause for celebration

Today, marriage itself celebrates a happy anniversary. Three years ago on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court guaranteed marriage equality in all 50 states. The court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges was historic and a fundamental affirmation of the constitutional right to marry.

What a high point for America. Affirming the right to marry regardless of sexual orientation reflects our nation's values of love and family.

But our work isn't finished. Fringe voices of hate continue to push back on progress. LGBTQIA+ people are disproportionally subjected to hate crimes. Employment discrimination is legal in many states. And the Trump administration seems to announce new attacks on LGBTQIA+ rights almost daily.

It's up to Congress to pass laws that provide federal protections outlawing discrimination. I'm ready. And the overwhelming majority of Americans are ready. We just need to take back Washington and get to work.

For today, let's remember to embrace the good news. Marriage equality is the law of the land.
